More about josie…

Josie is a journalist, author, broadcaster and public speaker. Throughout her fifteen-year career, she’s worked on staff for Reuters, The Wall Street Journal and The Independent. As a freelancer, she’s covered the intersection of the economy and gender for almost a decade, writing for the BBC, The Washington Post, Forbes, the Guardian, Business Insider, MSNBC, Fortune and a slew of other publications.

She writes a weekly Substack, Women Money Power, and is a founding editor of The Persistent, a digital journalism platform committed to amplifying women's voices, stories, ideas, and perspectives that launched in 2024. In August 2024, Josie published a 3,000-word feature on The Persistent—the product of months of reporting—examining how telehealth abortion providers serving patients in states where the procedure is severely restricted are being kicked off online payment platforms.

Josie was a 2020/2021 Knight-Bagehot Fellow at Columbia Journalism School in New York and holds a BA from the University of Bath in the U.K. and an MBA from Columbia Business School.

She’s an Associate Instructor within the Strategic Communications program at Columbia’s School of Professional Studies and sits on the board of directors of Grace Institute, a charity that provides workforce training for women in New York City, many of whom are single mothers, and all of whom are living below the poverty line.

Josie’s first book, WOMEN MONEY POWER: The Rise and Fall of Economic Equality (ABRAMS, 2024) charts the history of female economic empowerment in the U.S. since World War II through profiles and stories of unsung heroes. It received critical acclaim and extensive coverage across national and international media.

It was featured in People Magazine, on CNBC, ABC’s Good Morning America, PBS Newshour and the BBC. Since publication, Josie has been invited to speak about the book at more than forty organizations: Fortune 500 corporations, start-ups, nonprofits, educational institutions and government agencies.

During the six weeks after launch, she delivered book talks at Columbia Business School, Harvard Kennedy School, the United Nations, the World Economic Forum, the Swiss Consulate in New York, several investment banks, private equity funds, professional services firms, tech companies and law firms.

She appeared on over a dozen podcasts, spoke on many panels and was the main speaker for Live Nation’s International Women’s Day event and the Grace Institute’s International Women’s Day event. She also spoke at Worth Magazine’s Groundbreaking Women Summit annual conference.

In addition to the publicity in the U.S., Josie did a week-long book tour in the U.K., where she spoke at Waterstones in central London, Soho House and The Conduit club as well as at a slew of smaller organizations and women’s affinity groups.

Kirkus Review praised WOMEN MONEY POWER as “a vigorous, often inspiring account of women’s quests for economic equality.”  An economist for the IMF, Lisa Kolovich, in her review, noted that Josie’s “meticulous research and expert analysis shine in this compelling and empowering narrative.”

Jonathan Eig, the Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times bestselling author of KING: A Life, described it as “a bold, fascinating, and hugely important book.” Viviana A. Zelizer, the Lloyd Cotsen ’50 Professor of Sociology at Princeton University and author of ECONOMIC LIVES: How Culture Shapes the Economy, dubbed it a “welcome contribution to our understanding of persistent gender inequalities.” Deborah Copaken, New York Times bestselling author of LADYPARTS: A Memoir, praised it as two books in one: both an analysis of how far we’ve come in our fight against gender inequality as well as a scathing critique of how far we still have to go.” Copaken noted that Josie “brilliantly maps out, point by point, we are failing women, again and again, and she has the receipts, rigor, and storytelling chops to prove it.”

In June 2024, Amazon named WOMEN MONEY POWER an Editor’s Pick and one of its Best Books of the Year So Far.

The audiobook of WOMEN MONEY POWER, which Josie recorded herself, won an Audiofile Magazine Earphones Award. Judges described the audiobook as combining “flawless narration with intelligent writing to explain how cultural and institutional barriers have blocked U.S. women's access to financial independence and the power that comes with it.” They particularly praised Josie’s “careful research and writing.”

Josie has used the platform that WOMEN MONEY POWER has enabled her to establish herself as a public speaker and thought leader on the intersection of women, the labor market and the broader economy. As a speaker, she is represented by the Leigh Bureau and has committed to several high-profile speaking engagements throughout the rest of 2024 and into 2025.

Josie was born and raised in Switzerland by British-Czech parents. She’s worked in Switzerland, Germany, the U.K. and the U.S. and currently lives in New York City with her husband and daughter.
